I just tried texmfstart without any variables (but with adjusted PATH,
of course), and it seems to work just fine here, much better than
expected.

I had to regenerate all my formats because the texmf-linux subtree is
no longer part of the TEXMF searches, but after texexec --make all
now seems to be fine (with the new formats in texmf-project).

To other people: you may want to try this also. Perhaps setuptex has
been obsolete for years without any of use realising it ;-)
