The fontsynonyms HoeflerBlackItalic and the like are defined in type-xtx.
You need to define MyriadProBoldItalic (etc.) locally for these to work.

My adobe type classics/OpenType MyWay has some definitions to get you
started, but I don't have XeTeX-style typescripts for those Adobe fonts
lying around.

Sounds like it to me. Sounds like the stylesheet is the best place to put
the font switch logic (for the moment). The top-level (FO-shim) font
definitions would have things like:

\definefontsynonym [FO:Minion:regular:normal:caption] [MinionProCaption]

And the MinionProCaption synonym would then be defined in another typescript.
